Dense hardwoods such as ipe, mahogany, teak, and other exotic woods require specialized products and careful application. Costa Painting, LLC uses Messmer’s UV Plus for Hardwoods when a penetrating, natural-looking finish is appropriate for these surfaces.

Messmer’s is formulated to penetrate dense hardwood rather than create a film over the surface. When properly applied, it enhances the wood’s natural grain and rich color while providing protection against moisture, mildew, and UV exposure. Because it does not form a surface film, it is not subject to the cracking, flaking, and peeling associated with many conventional coatings.

Preparation and application are especially important with hardwoods. The surface must be properly cleaned, brightened when necessary, and allowed to dry thoroughly. The product must be applied evenly, and any excess that cannot penetrate the wood must be removed to prevent shiny or tacky areas.

Hardwood decks naturally require periodic maintenance to retain their color. Depending on sunlight, weather exposure, and use, Messmer’s generally recommends maintenance every one to two years. When recoating is needed, the surface can typically be cleaned and refinished without extensive stripping or sanding.
